How to Make a Whip Like Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones has been a popular character since he made his debut in 1981 in the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Jones is an archaeologist who goes on a treasure-seeking adventure and has to fight off the Nazis--and his bullwhip is part of his trademark look. Used as a protector and a weapon, the whip is an integral part of Indiana's adventures. You can make a whip quite easily with household items, for less cost than buying one at a costume or prop shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Brown duct tape (cut into three 12-foot lengths)
  • 10" wooden dowel rod (3/8" long)
  • Twine (one foot)

Instructions

    • 1

Place two chairs about 12 feet apart. Attach the three lengths of tape to the chairs, stretching them between the chairs.

    • 2

Fold the lengths of tape, but still leave the ends attached to the chairs.

    • 3

Braid the three lengths of tape as you would braid hair, taking the right piece of tape and placing it over the middle, and then placing the left piece of tape over the middle, crossing the pieces and pulling them taut to form the braid. Continue this process until you have braided it all, taking care to untangle the pieces along the way.

    • 4

Wrap more tape around the ends to seal it once you are finished braiding. Attach the other end to the dowel, and cover the dowel with tape until it is completely covered. Now the braid should be hanging off of the dowel.

Tie the twine on the end of the whip to make the "popper."
