What Is Bakugan?

Bakugan is a range of toys and a trading card game based on the Cartoon Network animated show "Bakugan." On the show, six friends fight to save the Earth from evil forces who attempted to destroy the Bakugan world Vestroia and have now turned their sights on Earth. The Bakugan, who appear on Earth in the form of marbles, aid the humans in defending Earth and restoring order to both their worlds.
  1. Character Marbles

    • Plastic Bakugan marbles identical to those seen on the show open to form Bakugan creatures with one of six attributes based to the six planets of Vestroia, the Bakugan homeland. Blue equals Aquos (water); red equals Pyrus (fire); light gray equals Haos (light); green equals Ventus (air); brown equals Subterra (earth); and black equals Darkus (darkness). Bakugan are identified by their warrior class (the type of creature they are physically), and their planet of origin. So a dragon from the planet Pyrus would be called Pyrus Dragonoid. Resellers list the marbles by their names, but commercial packaging leaves their identity a surprise. The wide variety of marbles, and the rarity of some creatures or attributes, makes them collectible. The Series 1 marbles, sometimes referred to as "classic" Bakugan, are slightly smaller than Series 2 marbles, but they function the same way. Special edition marbles are available in translucent or reverse colors where the main color is white and colored accents indicate the attribute.

    Trap Marbles

    • Along with the Series 2 marbles, a new line of Bakugan "trap" marbles were released to coincide with new Bakugan characters on the show. These marbles come in geometric shapes such as cylinders, cubes and pyramids, which adds a new challenge to rolling them accurately. This type of Bakugan is used to assist a regular Bakugan in battle, not fight alone.

    The Card Game

    • On the show, Bakugan battles take place in an alternate dimension when human "battle brawlers" set down Bakugan playing cards. In real life, challengers face each other across a table to see who has the stronger Bakugan. The game is played with two types of cards and the marbles. Each Bakugan has a certain amount of energy associated with it known as "G-Power," and players use the cards to raise or lower that energy to see who comes out on top. Because the Bakugan are initially in the form of marbles, rolling the marble to land on a card is part of the game. A battle begins when two Bakugans emerge from their marbles on the same card. The marbles are spring loaded and a magnet releases the Bakugan creature when it touches a metal surface.

    Gate Cards

    • Gate cards are metal cards that cause the Bakugan marbles to open, revealing the creature inside and that creature's initial G-Power. Each card has values on it for the six different attributes, and Bakugan receive increases or decreases in G-Power points based on their attribute (marble color). Gate cards also may have text instructions on the bottom, which change the game. Some will say the Bakugan with the lowest G-Power wins, so you never know how a battle may turn out.

    Ability Cards

    • After the gate cards are played, one Bakugan may be in the lead with a higher G-Power, but the game is not over. Players can use ability cards to give extra energy or special moves, depending on the card instructions. The cards can steal energy from the opponent, force the opponent to swap in a less powerful Bakugan, change a Bakugan's attribute or otherwise tip the balance of power. Ability cards are played once in a battle, then discarded, but players can play as many ability cards as they have in back and forth turns until someone is out of cards or opts to end the round and call a winner.
