Features
There is a long history of Batman throughout comic books, television, movies and even novels. Almost every form of Batman has featured the grappling hook as one of his key gadgets. Batman's grappling hook features three sharp prongs attached to a heavy-duty rope. The rope is rolled up and placed inside the grappling hook launcher that resembles a gun. The hook shoots out of this gun and the rope comes with it. When Batman is done using the grappling hook, a simple press of a button sends the rope back into the gun.
Function
Since Batman cannot fly, the best way for him to scale buildings and reach high places is by using his grappling hook. He will quickly be aware of the objects around him and once he finds a target for the hook to grasp onto, he will shoot the hook toward that target. For example, in Tim Burton's "Batman," Batman shoots the grappling hook to the top of a building and it wraps itself around a statue. Batman then presses the button to retrieve the rope and the rope pulls itself in and Batman up the building at the same time.
Batman has also utilized the grappling hook during fights with his enemies. In "Batman Returns," an enemy was holding somebody hostage. Batman quickly shot a version of his grappling hook into a brick wall and then manually pulled the rope so that the hook and attached piece of brick would knock out the enemy.
Types
Batman's grappling hook has gone through some changes through the history of Batman, and it can appear different in every reincarnation, but the usefulness remains the same. For example, from "Batman" to "Batman Returns," the grappling hook got smaller, but this only made it easier for Batman to use and it served the same purposes.
Toy action figures of Batman sometimes come with grappling hook accessories, which is basically a small spring-loaded weapon. Batman costumes also have grappling hook accessories, but they feature a long rope and no mechanism to actually shoot the grappling hook out of. These hooks may also feature two prongs on the end instead of the typical three seen in Batman movies.
Benefits
Using the grappling hook has helped Batman define himself more as a superhero. It has helped him get out of tough situations and has been an aide in saving lives. One of the main benefits has been to give Batman the ability to jump off high buildings and catch himself before he hits the ground by shooting the grappling hook and holding his weight up.
Warning
Batman's grappling hook is a work of fiction; there are not actual working models readily available. Trying to create your own or using a prop grappling hook to imitate the things that Batman does is very dangerous and could be deadly. Always use caution and get the proper training when you are trying to perform any stunts.
