How to Make a Doll Onesie

Every doll needs an outfit and, for baby dolls, onesies are a realistic option. If your child's doll needs a new outfit, making your own onesie can be a great way to customize the look of the doll's outfit. Though sewing a onesie from scratch is entirely possible, the easiest way to make a onesie for a doll is to use a pre-existing onesie meant for a baby. You can buy a new one, or use one of the many old ones you may have from your child's younger years. Any size will work.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Deconstruct the onesie you wish to use by making cuts at the seams until you end up with four separate pieces. When finished, you should have two separate sleeves, a front side and a back side.

    • 2

Lay the front side of the onesie face down on a table and place the doll face down on top of it, facing in the same direction. Place the back piece of the onesie on the backside of the doll with the tag facing out.

    • 3

Pin the back of the onesie to the front of the onesie at the shoulder seams. Make sure the opening between the pins is large enough to fit over the doll's head.

    • 4

Remove the onesie from the doll with the pins still in place. Lay the onesie on your working table so that both pieces are still connected at the shoulders, and are still face down.

    • 5

Sew the shoulder seams together, using your pins as a guide.

    • 6

Turn your sleeves inside out and place one of them around the doll's arm. Cut and hem each sleeve to the desired length.

    • 7

Put the onesie back over the doll's head and use pins to attach the two sleeves to the onesie.

    • 8

Sew the sleeves onto the onesie, once again using your pins as your guide. Cut away any excess fabric as you go.

    • 9

Pin the sides of the onesie, or the area stretching from just under the armpit, to the upper to mid thighs.

    • 10

Sew the areas pinned in step 9, cutting away the excess fabric as you go.

    • 11

Make sure the doll is face up, and cut away the fabric to recreate the original shape of the onesie. Cut in an arch shape, from the hip to just below the crotch. Do this on both sides of the legs and pin the fabric as you go.

    • 12

Repeat step 11 on the backside of the doll, but leave a longer piece of fabric in the middle, which will wrap through the legs and attach to the other side.

    • 13

Sew the pinned areas, but do not attach the longer piece of fabric.

    • 14

Turn the onesie inside out. It should appear to be almost complete, with the longer strip of fabric to go between the legs being the only thing left unfinished.

    • 15

Tidy up the longer piece of fabric, hemming as necessary. Use Velcro to attach the longer piece of fabric to the front of the onesie.
