How to Make a Straw Spinner

A straw spinner is a simple toy to make that any toddler will enjoy. It incorporates two straws --o ne is blown through, spinning the other like a propeller. Making straw spinners only takes a few minutes, so they are wonderful crafts for a birthday party or classroom project. The materials are comprised of common household items, making affordable toys. These can also be used in rudimentary science experiments, showing the power of wind.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the straw with the largest diameter in two, creating a flat crease at one end.

    • 2

Cut two 45-degree notches at the creased end, using scissors. Leave a small section of the crease uncut, forming a diamond shape when unfolded.

    • 3

Unfold the straw and adhere tape over each end, leaving only the diamond-shaped cut open, making the spinner.

    • 4

Cut a small "V" notch near one end of the straw with the smaller diameter.

    • 5

Insert the "V"-notched straw into the diamond-shaped cut in the other straw.

    • 6

Dab a little glue onto the straws and sprinkle glitter over each straw and allow the glue to dry. Or, color the straws with different colored fluorescent markers.

    • 7

Pick up the toy and blow through the smaller straw, while placing one finger over the opposite end. Or blow through the smaller straw while the spinner rests on a table.
