How to Troubleshoot a Remote Control Airplane

Although many people will never experience the thrill of flying a real aircraft, you can still have fun experimenting with remote controlled planes. Remote controlled planes can provide hours of entertainment for kids and adults alike̵2;until your aircraft starts malfunctioning. When first learning to fly a remote control plane, your aircraft will likely have its fair share of collisions. Troubleshoot your plane to see what could be causing it to malfunction.

Instructions

  1. Mechanical Troubleshooting

    • 1

Press the buttons on your remote control. If absolutely nothing happens, check the batteries to see if they are still good. If not, replace them with new batteries.

    • 2

Press the buttons on the remote control. If nothing happens and the batteries are fully functional, there could be a loose connection in your remote. Open the remote and check your wire connections to make sure nothing is loose̵2;if it is you will need to re-solder the connections.

    • 3

Fly the plane to see if the motor is fully functional. If the motor cuts out there is could be a problem with the ESC control cutting back on the throttle to prevent any accidents. To resolve this issue, move the throttle stick back to zero and power up again.

    • 4

Open up the remote control to see if everything seems in order. If you notice melted connectors, but the plane still seems to be in working order, the connectors will need to be replaced to prevent further damage.

    Flying Troubleshooting

    • 5

Attempt to take off. If the plane remains on the ground, check the power source to make sure there is enough power. Other options include applying more up-elevator to get the plane off the ground. Another option is to make sure the airplane is not pointed downwards.

    • 6

Fly the aircraft on a straight path. If the airplane zooms upwards and then drops the aircraft is likely too heavy on the tail end. Move the battery further forward inside the plane so the back end isn̵7;t as heavy.Attempt to turn the plane in mid-flight. If the plane rolls and dives into the ground instead of turning this could be because the plane stalled. Use less elevator when making a turn and keep your airspeed constant to avoid a drop.

    • 7

Attempt to fly the plane in a straight line, while removing your hands from the control for a few seconds. If the airplane needs constant controls, then it could be an advanced model that is not meant for beginners. Try using a lightweight training plane until your skills have improved.
