How to Fix a Hot Wheels Mach 5 With Sound

Since its two-year television run in the United States, from 1967 to 1968, "Speed Racer" and the title character's infamous race car, the Mach 5, have become pop icons. In addition to a revised cartoon in the early 1990s and a feature film in 2008, the "Speed Racer" franchise has produced numerous comic books and toys, including Mattel's Hot Wheels Mach 5 Big Sounds Car. The toy emits sounds through a small speaker inside its body. Common problems for the Mach 5 include battery replacement, loose speaker cables and a loose sound switch.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Mach Five upside down, and open the battery compartment door with a small Phillips screwdriver. Install new AA batteries, replace the battery door and test whether the Mach 5 makes sounds.

    • 2

Remove the screws underneath the chassis of the Mach 5 with your screwdriver, and separate the top half from the bottom. Locate the small speaker located near the trunk section of the vehicle. Check to ensure the speaker wire is in place. If not, heat up a soldering iron, twist the speaker wire around the terminal by hand and melt a small bit of solder onto the connection to solidify it.

    • 3

Check the push-button sound switch to ensure the spring is in place. If the spring has come loose, use needle-nose pliers to reinsert the spring underneath the button assembly so the push-button can activate when you push it down.

    • 4

Use the screwdriver to reassemble the Mach 5, then test the sound button on the back.
