How to Make a Small Playhouse for a Girl

Little girls love to pretend. They especially love to pretend that they are all grown up and running their own home. You can indulge this pretend play by building a simple playhouse just for her. Very few tools are needed and the method is not complicated. An hour of work and some time for the paint to dry and you'll have a playhouse that will engage her imagination for hours on end.

Things You'll Need

  • Large box, such as for a refrigerator
  • Sharp utility knife
  • Packing tape
  • Pencil
  • Primer
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint
  • Large decals, flowers and hearts are popular
  • Acrylic sealant spray
  • Round bathroom rug
  • Decorative pillows

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the bottom flaps of the box with the utility knife. Stand the box up and use the packing tape to tape the top flaps together so that the lie flat. Tape the flaps on both the inside and the outside of the box for security.

    • 2

Use the pencil to draw out a pattern for a door on one side of the box. You can use any design you choose. A rectangular door might be traditional, but an arched door can be used as well. If you like, you can add a window to the door. Cut out the door with the utility knife.

    • 3

Draw several windows on the other three sides of the box. Again, you can choose the design. Circular windows make a nice feature, but you can stick with square windows if you like. Cut these windows out with the utility knife.

    • 4

Apply a thin coat of primer and allow to dry. This usually takes two to three hours. Add a second coat of primer and allow to dry. Paint the playhouse with whatever color you choose. Most girls like pink and purple, but you might choose blue, yellow or green. You should apply three thin coats of paint, allowing the paint to dry for two or three hours between coats. You should paint and prime both the inside and the outside of the playhouse.

    • 5

When the paint is dry, apply the large decals in any pattern you choose to the outside of the playhouse. It doesn't matter where you put them, but adding flowers and hearts around doors and windows is a nice touch. Get creative and maybe ask the girl who will use the playhouse to add the decals herself.

Move the playhouse to a well-ventilated area and spray with the sealant spray. You shouldn't need more than a very thin coat. Allow this coat to dry thoroughly before adding the second coat. The sealant spray should add stability to the playhouse and keep the paint from rubbing off as the child plays. You should use the sealant spray on the inside and outside of the playhouse.

After the sealant spray has dried, move the playhouse to an area safely accessible to the girl. Place the rug and pillows inside the playhouse to make it more welcoming.
