How to Build Mario Out of Legos

Mario is a video game character created by Nintendo in 1985. He is one of the most popular characters and has been featured in games for all of Nintendo's systems, from NES to Wii. Building a Mario character from LEGO bricks can be challenging, as it requires at least 60 pieces and anywhere from several minutes to hours to build. It can be built with just black, red, blue and yellow pieces, but substitute flesh-colored pieces for the yellow, and Mario can almost come to life.

Instructions

  1. Legs

    • 1

Attach the red 2-by-8 piece to two red 2-by-3 pieces at each end. There should be no overhang from the 2-by-3 pieces. They should be flush with the 2-by-8 piece at each end.

    • 2

Offset two 2-by-3 pieces underneath the red 2-by-3 pieces and leave 1-by-2 hanging beyond the edges of the red pieces.

    • 3

Fasten the two 2-by-4 blue pieces to the 2-by-3 pieces already attached to the newly forming legs. They should have 1-by-2 overhang on one end and the flush on the other side with the existing blue pieces. You are looking at Mario's shoes.

    Body

    • 4

Connect the red 2-by-4 with a red 1-by-2, yellow 1-by-2 and red 2-by-2 on top of it in this order. Take a red 2-by-2 and attach a yellow 1-by-2 and red 1-by-2 to it, also in this order. Place a red 2-by-2 on top of the yellow 1-by-2 that is on top of the 2-by-4. Do the same for the yellow 1-by-2 that is on top of the red 2-by-2, but attach the other end of it to the top of the 2-by-4 piece. On top of each red 2-by-2, attach a red 1-by-2 at the farthest edge. Then add another red 1-by-2 to the very top. This piece should look like Mario's suspenders.

    • 5

Build Mario's arms by placing two blue 2-by-2 bricks, one on top of the other, in the gap left by the suspenders. Place a blue 2-by-4 on each side of the suspender's "straps" where there is an open 1-by-2 space. Underneath this piece, place a 1-by-2 blue piece right next to the red brick on both sides. On top of the 2-by-4 piece, attach a blue 2-by-3 piece to each side, keeping them flush with the red bricks. Follow this with a blue 1-by-2 on the left side and two blue 1-by-2 on the right. These are Mario's shoulders, arms and chest.

    • 6

Attach a yellow 2-by-2 piece underneath the remaining portion of each blue 2-by-4 on the arms. Under this piece, place a yellow 2-by-3 on each side, pushing one edge right next to the red bricks. Fasten one more yellow 2-by-2 to each side under the yellow 2-by-3, lining up the outermost edge.

    Head

    • 7

Connect two yellow 2-by-4 pieces on top of one another. Do the same with two 2-by-2 black pieces. On top of the black pieces, attach two 1-by-2 yellows (on top of one another) and two 1-by-2 black (also on top of one another), in that order.

    • 8

Attach one black 2-by-2 piece to the top of they yellow bricks on the right edge, but do not go over the side. Next to this piece, place a yellow 1-by-2 brick. At the end of the yellow 2-by-4, place a yellow 2-by-2 next to the yellow 1-by-2 so that the rest of the piece is hanging over the edge. Above the black 2-by-2, add a black 1-by-2, lining up to the right edge. Next, add a yellow 2-by-2 on top of the remaining black 2-by-2 and yellow 1-by-2 below. Connect a yellow 1-by-2 and black 1-by-2 to the top of the yellow 2-by-2 below. Set the black 2-by-2, yellow 1-by-2 and black 1-by-2 stacked pieces next to the right edge of the yellow 2-by-4 bricks. On top of the 1-by-2 yellow tower from the black 2-by-2 side and the 1-by-2 black single from the yellow 2-by-4 side, attach a black 2-by-3 piece to connect the two sides. To the left of this piece, attach a yellow 2-by-2. Finally, add two black 1-by-2 pieces, one on top of the other.

    • 9

Take a yellow 2-by-4 and attach a black 2-by-4 on top of it. Line these up to the left edge of the yellow 2-by-4 bricks for the head, attaching part of the black 2-by-4 to the yellow 2-by-2 from the previously completed pieces. To the left of the yellow 2-by-2, add a black 1-by-2 and a yellow 2-by-3 on top of the black 2-by-4. There should be 1-by-2 of overhang from the yellow 2-by-3. To the left of the black 1-by-2 tower, attach a yellow 1-by-2, then a yellow 2-by-2 and a yellow 2-by-2 on top of these. Mario's head is complete.

    • 10

Start with the black 2-by-3 at the top-right corner of the head and attach the red 2-by-10, letting it hang off of the left side 2-by-2. Indent 1-by-2 and attach a red 2-by-3 on top of the 2-by-10 and attach another red 2-by-3 to the left of the first. Mario's hat is ready to wear.

    Assemble

    • 11

Attach the legs to the body portion of Mario by pressing them into the spot reserved underneath the suspenders and hands.

    • 12

Connect Mario's head by attaching the black 2-by-2 at the bottom of his head to the blue 1-by-2 on his right shoulder on the top. Make sure to indent so that 1-by-2 of the black on the bottom of his head hangs over on the right and 2-by-2 of the yellow hangs over on the left.

    • 13

Starting with the black 2-by-3 at the top right corner of the head, attach the red 2-by-10, letting it hang off of the left side 2-by-2.
