How to Make a Stick Horse for Kids

Stick horses offer a way for children to use their imaginations while running, jumping and exercising. They can serve as the finishing touch for Halloween costumes or be an everyday plaything. The horse can be as detailed as you want it to be, or you can use materials you have on hand to quickly replicate this classic toy.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any slivers, hardware or broom threads from the broomstick. Designate one end to be the head and one to be the tail.

    • 2

Fill a tube sock with crumpled newspaper, forming it into a cylindrical-shaped horse head. Insert the broom stick a few inches into the open end of the sock, pushing it tight against the newspaper. The tube sock will hang down and away from the broomstick. Add more paper to add shape.

    • 3

Secure the sock to the broomstick with glue and ribbon. Tie the ribbon in decorative bows.

    • 4

Cut yarn into 3-inch sections. Glue these sections to the top of the sock where the horse's mane would be. Cut more yarn into 12-inch sections and glue them to the other end of the broomstick for the horse's tail. Add ribbon to disguise the glue and decorate the hair.

    • 5

Glue googly eyes to the sides of the sock where the eyes should be. Cut round felt pieces for the nostrils and triangular pieces for the ears. Glue the felt to the nose and ear areas. If you want the ears to stand up, use cardboard as backing.
