How to Make a Kart Go Backwards

Go-karts are more than just an attraction at family fun centers; those karts are motorized and require seat belts for older children and adults who drive the electric- or gas-powered karts around a racetrack. Manual go-karts powered by human effort allow children from as young as three-years-old to pedal forward, backward and ride around their neighborhoods with ease. As long as you select a kart with an automatic freewheel gearbox, you can make a go-kart go backward.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a go-kart with an automatic freewheel (AF) gearbox that automatically switches the kart's gears for forward or backward pedaling depending on whether or not the kart is stationary.

    • 2

Push forward and down on the pedals to make the kart go forward. Stop pedaling to allow the kart to coast under the power of gravity.

    • 3

Pedal backward while the kart is moving to apply the brakes and make the kart stop. Push the pedals backward from a stationary position to make the kart go backward or move in a reverse position.
