How to Fix a Polystyrene Airplane

Polystyrene (or Styrofoam, as it is commonly known) is a lightweight material used in many applications. Many radio-controlled airplanes are made from it. While learning to pilot one of these planes, crashes are certainly to be expected. A particularly bad crash may even break the plane. But there are techniques to fix a broken polystyrene plane. The key is to bond the material back with a strong, yet lightweight, material that will not deform the foam.

Things You'll Need

  • White craft glue, wood glue or spray adhesive
  • Toothpicks

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose pieces of polystyrene from the edges of the broken pieces. Ensure that both parts are clean and dry.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of glue to both of the broken pieces. Use white craft glue, wood glue or spray adhesive to see which bonds best for your particular application.

    • 3

Insert toothpicks into one of the broken pieces. Press the toothpick halfway into the foam, leaving the other half exposed. Cut the toothpicks into shorter pieces if needed. Short pieces may be necessary for smaller repairs.

    • 4

Allow the glue to dry slightly, until it is tacky.

    • 5

Press the broken pieces of polystyrene together. Ensure that the toothpicks insert properly into the mating piece. Press together until the glue forms a bond between the pieces.

    • 6

Allow the glue to completely dry before attempting normal use of the airplane. This could take up to 24 hours.
