Instructions
Measure the face of your 6-foot-long 2x4, because the actual size and thickness of wood varies. Divide that amount in half, and make a mark on each side end of the wood pertaining to the sum. Your mark on each end should be in the in the center of the face. Using a chalk line, snap a line from one mark to the next. Using the same sum as before, create marks on the top and bottom of the 2x4, from one end to the other. With a straight edge ruler, draw lines from the top mark to the bottom mark all the way across the wood. Your project should now look like two strips of boxes.
Divide the length of the 2x4 into three parts, and cut along the closest top-to-bottom line using a table saw. Cut each 2-foot section from side to side. You should now have six strips of boxes. Cut each strip into individual boxes, using a large pair of pliers to hold the wood for the last three cuts on each strip. This will keep your finger from getting too close to the saw blade.
Place the blocks on a large piece of cardboard outside your home. Spray the top and sides with an acrylic paint, because it is non-toxic when it dries. Allow time for the paint to completely dry, then turn the blocks over and paint the other face. Once dry, use a fine-tip artist's brush and acrylic paint to draw letters on all the faces of the blocks. Painting the blocks or letters different colors will add variety to the project. If you decide to make the blocks different colors, spray paint each color on a separate piece of cardboard.
