How to Make Your Own Toy Bricks

Did you ever notice how kids usually have more fun playing with a cardboard box than the actual toy it contained? Well, why not incorporate this concept into constructing homemade cardboard building blocks? Crafting a set of cardboard toy bricks can come from your own cupboards in the form of recyclable boxes and containers. Your children will not only have fun playing with these toy bricks, but they will enjoy constructing them as well.

Instructions

    • 1
Empty cereal boxes make great building blocks.

Search your kitchen pantry for cardboard recyclable boxes used for cereals, pastas, crackers, pudding, rice, soda cans and more. Rummage through your closets for shirt, jewelry and shoe boxes in various different shapes and sizes. Check the fridge for empty milk and juice cartons. Raid your cabinets for cylindrical cardboard containers normally used for breadcrumbs and oatmeal. You can also get materials from used paper towel and toilet paper rolls.

Newspaper will make the blocks sturdy.

Clean out the boxes and stuff them with crumpled up newspaper to ensure sturdiness. Seal the boxes securely with packing tape. Gift wrap each cardboard box and cylinder using the tape and the brown craft paper.

Decorate your toy bricks with paints and more.

Decorate the cardboard blocks using markers or paint. Embellish with patterned scrapbooking papers, stickers and rubber stamps. Create designs on the boxes to resemble toy bricks. Draw windows on the cylinders to represent castle towers.

      Construct towers and castles.

Set your homemade cardboard blocks aside to dry. Build towers, forts and castles with the bricks. Store the blocks in laundry baskets or large plastic bins.
