How to Build a Pyramid Kite

Flying a kite is fun activity that children and adults of all ages can take part in. In order for a kite to fly correctly, it must be designed in a certain shape that allows it to catch the wind. For most kites, this means a flat diamond shape. It is possible, however, to design a kite with a 3-D build that can function in the same way. Pyramid kites are built to fly just as well as flat kites, but come with the added bonus of standing out in the sky.

Instructions

    • 1

Form a triangle shape with three straws. Slide a piece of string through each straw, leaving as little slack as possible. Once the string has gone through each of the straws, tie a knot at the end so the straws are tied together. Cut off any extra string.

    • 2

Tie together another three straws to form the back and bottom of the kite. Tie the string to the first triangle so you're left with a pyramid shape.

    • 3

Trace the two sides of the straw pyramid on a sheet of tissue paper. Add an additional half inch, then cut out the shape.

    • 4

Glue the tissue paper to your pyramid with rubber cement, curling the extra half inch around the straws.

    • 5

Repeat steps one through four, creating three more straw pyramids. Be sure to only cover two sides of each pyramid with tissue paper. This will leave the additional side and bottom open to help catch the wind.

    • 6

Stack the four pyramids on top of each other so they form one larger pyramid. Three will go on the bottom, with the fourth on top. Secure the pyramids together with string and rubber cement.

    • 7

Attach your kite string to the pyramid by knotting it to one of the pyramid corners. The kite will now be ready to fly.
