How to Set Up the Perfect Breyer Horse Barn

Any child who loves horses loves playing with Breyer horses. These realistic, hand-painted horses have captured children's imaginations for decades. Giving a Breyer horse a realistic home perfectly complements these vividly detailed toys. Setting up a Breyer horse barn will depend on what elements you have at your disposal, but should always include a stable, riding area and necessities such as food and water. Optional elements can include the occasional barn visitors such as the veterinarian and farrier.

Instructions

  1. Building the Stable

    • 1

Create a stable for your horses to stay in during the day and at night. Although horses are often turned out in a paddock, they shouldn't stay outside all day and all night in order to stay in prime condition. If you don't have a toy stable, you can use your imagination by using preexisting toys such as wooden building blocks or LEGO blocks. Each horse should be given an individual stall. Try adding shavings from a hamster bed to create realistic bedding for your horses. Ribbon or string can be used for stable ties to open and shut the openings to the horses' stalls.

    • 2

Create a riding area and decide if your horses will have English, Dressage or Western riders. If the horses have English riders, then your riding area will need jumps. Any toy, straw or piece of plastic can create a "fence" for your horse to jump over. Dressage and Western riders will not need any standards, but Western riders may opt to include barrel racing as one of the outdoor exercises for her horses. Use any form of miniature "barrel" to create an obstacle for the Breyer horse to maneuver around. Cans of soup or plastic curlers are good ideas.

    • 3

Stock your barn with food and water for your horses. When turned out to pasture, horses will eat grass, but their owners should supply her horses with fresh water, hay bales and pellet-based food. In order to create realistic grass, try using a swatch of green fabric or use sugar cubes dyed with yellow food coloring for hay bales.

Treat your Breyer horses to a special visit from the veterinarian or the farrier. Just like in real life, horses will need to see the vet for vaccinations and the farrier for trimming the horses' hooves. Use Barbie dolls or any other human toy to attend to the horses' needs.
