How to Make a Toy Clown

A clown's job is to entertain people. He does this by dressing in outrageous outfits -- often mismatched -- and typically wears large shoes or a big red nose on his face. Clowns wear face makeup sometimes that displays a big smile or an unhappy frown. The clown frolics about in a comical manner and often falls, trips or stumbles his way across the stage. Make homemade clown toys out of inexpensive supplies to amuse and delight youngsters.

Instructions

  1. Stand Up Clown

    • 1

Cut the bouncy ball in half. An adult should do this with a sharp craft knife.

    • 2

Draw a 4-inch square on a sheet of white paper with a ruler. Cut the square out with a pair of scissors.

    • 3

Roll the paper into a tube shape that fits snugly around the cut edge of the bouncy ball.

    • 4

Tape the cut edges of the tube together and then tape an opening of the tube around the flat side of the bouncy ball.

    • 5

Knock the tube over gently with your fingertips. If it stands back up, it is the right size. If not, trim the tube by 1/2-inch with the scissors. Knock the tube over again to see if it stands back up. Repeat the trimming technique until the tube stands up by itself.

    • 6

Draw a clown face onto the white tube with the colored markers.. Add polka dots or zany stripes to create an outfit for the clown if you desire. The clown toy is complete and ready to entertain.

    Tossing Game Clown

    • 7

Paint a coffee can or another small container with a lid with white acrylic paint and a craft paint brush. Allow the white paint to dry before continuing to make the clown toy.

    • 8

Draw a big smile on one side of the can with a red marker and two eyes above it with a black marker.

    • 9

Glue one large red pom-pom to the middle of the face to form the clown's nose. Use a hot glue gun to attach it. Hold the pom-pom in place for a few seconds while it dries.

    • 10

Attach a funnel upside down on the lid of the container with hot glue. Add the other red pom-pom to the tip of the funnel with the glue. This forms the clown's hat.

    • 11

Place a large bowl upside-down on a sheet of cardboard.

    • 12

Trace around the bowl with a pencil. Remove the bowl.

    • 13

Flip another bowl upside down that is 1 inch or 2 inches smaller than the first bowl. Trace around it with the pencil.

    • 14

Cut out a cardboard ring by cutting along the outside and inside line with a pair of scissors. This forms a ring that you can toss over the clown's funnel hat. Cut out three or four more rings.

    • 15

Decorate the cardboard rings with colored markers. Set the clown toy on the floor 4 feet to 5 feet away from you. Take turns tossing the rings onto the clown toy.
