How to Troubleshoot Power Wheels 12 Volt Recharge Batteries

Power Wheels, manufactured by Fisher Price, are child-sized vehicles that are built to resemble actual vehicles, like Jeeps, trucks and cars. These vehicles are powered by 10- or 12-volt, rechargeable batteries. The batteries can be recharged by a plug-in wall charger, which comes with the Power Wheels vehicle. However, these batteries do not last forever. Fisher Price clearly states that Power Wheels batteries last anywhere from one to three years depending on the frequency of use. Replacement batteries are sold at most retail stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the Power Wheels vehicle. Remove the battery by pressing in on the two tabs that connect the battery's cable. Slide the cable out of the battery.

    • 2

Plug one end of the wall charger into an AC wall socket and plug the other end into the battery. Allow the battery to charge for 14 hours.

    • 3

Remove the battery from the charger and place it back into the Power Wheels vehicle. If the vehicle does not power up after the charge, the battery might be dead.

    • 4

Determine if your Power Wheels vehicle comes with a 25-amp car fuse that fits into a fuse slot on top of the battery. Remove the fuse with a pair of pliers. Turn your digital multimeter to the "amps" setting and place the leads to the amp. If you get a reading of 25 amps, it means the fuse is good but the battery is probably dead. If the fuse is blown, replace it and try to power the vehicle. Replace the battery if it still doesn't work.
