How to Make Bouncing Putty

Bouncing putty is a child's toy that has the properties of both a liquid and a solid. When it stretches slowly, it extends like taffy, but when it is pulled apart with a sharp yank, it snaps into two pieces. You can work with it like modeling clay, and if you form it into a compact ball and throw it, it bounces. While many brands of bouncing putty are available, it is easy to make some in your own home.

Things You'll Need

Mixing bowl
White glue
Liquid starch
Food coloring
Aluminum foil
Airtight container

Instructions

  Combine 1 cup of white glue and ½ cup of liquid starch in a mixing bowl. If you wish, add a few drops of food coloring to give the mixture some color. Otherwise, it will be white.

  Mix the ingredients together thoroughly. Notice that as you mix, the glue and starch combine and thicken.

  Cover the mixing bowl with a sheet of aluminum foil.

  Place the covered mixing bowl in the refrigerator overnight. The putty will be ready to use in the morning.
