How to Lubricate a Ball Bearing in a Yo-Yo

The metal bearings in the center of your yo-yo allow it to spin and snap back according to the tugs you perform for various tricks. The bearing can stiffen and the moving parts catch after a lot of play or time sitting unused. Whether you have an old yo-yo that you want to restore to workable condition, or you have a trick yo-yo that is frequently used, oiling the bearing can improve the yo-yo's response to your tugs during tricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp each half of the yo-yo by holding it with both hands and twist them in opposite directions to unscrew the yo-yo. If the yo-yo tightens, change twisting directions on both halves to loosen and split the yo-yo into two pieces. Hold the yo-yo over a table to avoid losing any small pieces.

    • 2

Lay the halves of the yo-yo, outside-down, over a paper towel.

    • 3

Pinch the ball bearing with a pair of needle-nosed pliers and wiggle it out of place to remove it from where it is nested. Set it onto the paper towel.

    • 4

Squeeze a 1 to 2 drops of bearing oil to the side of the bearing in the tiny gap between the center of the bearing and the sides. This will allow the oil to reach into the bearing where tiny metal balls will distribute it evenly as they roll around during yo-yo use.

    • 5

Wipe away all of the oil from the outside of the bearing with a paper towel. The oil your yo-yo needs has already reached the balls inside of the bearing and the oil can destroy plastic and strings if you leave it coated on the outside of the bearing.

    • 6

Place the bearing back into the nesting spot over the yo-yo's center bolt and screw the yo-yo back together by twisting the sides in opposite directions, the same way you took it apart.
