Kinds Of Yo-Yos

Yo-yos offer entertainment for the entire family. Whether you're just beginning and learning basic yo-yo tricks, or you're at a more advanced level and learning expert and master tricks, yo-yos are available in different designs. They are made of wood, plastic or metal and each design comes with one of four axle styles.
  1. Classic Yo-Yo

    • The classic yo-yo is also known as the traditional or imperial yo-yo. Most people will start with a classic yo-yo because it is ideal for learning basic tricks. The classic style has a narrow string gap and body, making it easy to do loops. It has a quick response. This yo-yo is also easy to throw down and pull back up, and has a comfortable string length.

    Modified Yo-Yo

    • The modified yo-yo is commonly referred to as the modern shape yo-yo or the Proyo. It is a combination of the classic yo-yo and butterfly yo-yo styles. This yo-yo has rounded rims and a slim profile, much like the classic yo-yo, but it has additional rim weight, making it able to sleep longer. Its style makes it ideal for string and loop tricks. The modified yo-yo is more advanced than the classic style, and it is better for learning more advanced tricks.

    Butterfly Yo-Yo

    • The butterfly yo-yo is more popular among intermediate and advanced players. It is also known as the GT, Saber or wing shape yo-yo. From the side, the yo-yo resembles a butterfly because its shape is the reverse of the classic yo-yo. The yo-yo has a wide string gap, making it easier to land the yo-yo on the string for string tricks. The butterfly yo-yo has larger bearings allowing for longer sleep times of over five minutes, according to the Yo Yo Spirit website.

    Yo-Yo Axles

    • Every type of yo-yo has one of four axle types. The most common among basic yo-yos is the fixed metal axle, a single metal bar that connects the two discs. A fixed wooden axle is similar, but allows for a longer sleep time. Another type of axle is the trans-axle. This type has an individual spinning sleeve over the axle, reducing friction and also allowing for a longer sleep time. The two discs can be separated to untangle the string. This style is not as ideal for looping tricks; the fixed axle yo-yo is a better option. The ball bearing axle is similar to the trans-axle as it has individual spinning parts. This axle allows for quick spins, longer tricks and is better during competitions.

    Considerations

    • In choosing a yo-yo, there are a number of factors to consider. If you're a beginner starting out, the classic yo-yo is ideal until you are ready to move on to more advanced tricks. The classic yo-yo will keep moving throughout an entire looping trick. It is important to develop yo-yo skills and learn basic and intermediate tricks before advancing to the butterfly yo-yo and attempting advanced tricks. Make sure to purchase a yo-yo made in a design, material and color you are comfortable with.
