How to Identify Star Wars Action Figures

Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, R2-D2, Jabba the Hutt and Queen Amidala adorn the shelves and toy chests of Star Wars fans all over the world. Star Wars action figures, in production since 1977, are popular items for both children and collectors. When buying action figures, either new or used, it's important to keep a few details in mind to make sure you buy authentic products. Many people create mock-ups of the action figures, trying to pass them off as the real item.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the figure. It should look like a character from the Star Wars movies, television shows, books or comics. Remember that as of 2011, not many of the characters from the Star Wars books or comics have action figures. The packaging states the character's name and where to find the character in the Star Wars universe. The hair, clothing, facial structure and shape all help consumers identify the figure. For example, a male figure dressed in a gray tunic and pants with black boots is most likely an Imperial officer.

    • 2

Identify who made the figure. Kenner and Hasbro are the only two companies with the official licensing to manufacture Star Wars figures. Kenner is no longer in existence, but as of 2011, Hasbro produced Kenner reproductions of classic figures. Each figure comes with a back card identifying the manufacturer.

Action figures not produced by these companies are knock-offs.

Watch the movies and look at the other media to help identify the characters. Hasbro's website lists the figures currently sold with pictures. Collector books and websites also show images of the figures.

Check for the craftsmanship. An official figure looks professionally crafted with all of the major details. For example, look at the coloration on an Anakin Skywalker figure from the battle on Geonosis. The colors of his tunic should match the actual costume in the movie. Missing patterns or marks is an indication of a possible knock-off item.
