The Best Toys for a 9-Year-Old Girl

It used to be easy to select a toy for a 9-year-old girl, but kids are exposed to all sorts of toys these days, and it can be difficult to decide what the best toys are. Focus on what you know the girl likes and then think about what you would like her to have. Choose something that fits for both of you. If you don't know the girl well, choose a toy in a particular category that you know she likes.

Arts and Crafts
- Consider buying an arts and crafts gift for a 9-year-old girl. Choose a kit that the girl can use to create something, like a butterfly or a simple model ship. Consider putting together your own arts and crafts travel box, with crayons, construction paper, pens, scissors, glitter and glue. Choose an item like Legos that the girl can use to create or build something. Consider an educational or science-based kit, like one about life science that lets the girl test soil and learn about insects.
Fictional Books, Magazines and How-To Project Books
- Choose books that appeal to 9-year-old girls' interests. Many girls of this age enjoy reading fictional stories, magazines and how-to project books. Classic books include Judy Blume's "Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret?" and Lynne Banks's "The Indian in the Cupboard." Consider giving a book about growing up and trying to fit in, like "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume. Choose a book that fits where the girl is development-wise -- some 9-year-olds are more advanced than others. Don't give a book that's too advance.
Dolls or Stuffed Animals
- Consider giving a 9-year-old a doll or stuffed animal. Although some 9-year-olds are moving past this stage, many still enjoy playing with dolls. Combine the child's need for projects or a how-to kit and give her a paper doll kit. Choose one that allows her to decorate the doll's clothing and to mix and match what the doll wears. Give the child a stuffed animal of her favorite animal to add to her stuffed animal collection.
Outdoor Toys
- Give the child an outdoor toy to encourage her to be active. Give her a jump rope, a very popular item with girls of this age, so she can practice her moves at home before showing them off at recess. Give her double dutch jumping ropes if she usually plays with friends. Consider giving her a hop ball, which she can sit on and bounce up and down on outdoors. These balls are similar to stability balls that many adults use, except hop balls have handles for kids to hang on to. Give a hop ball to encourage the child to play outdoors and exercise.
