Babies
For babies, many of the same toys that entertain at home can also entertain just as easily in the car or an airplane. Rattles can provide a distraction and also can double as a teething toy if the baby happens to also be cutting teeth. They also are small and easy to pack. Colorful, plastic nesting blocks can be stacked repeatedly on an airplane tray table. They also can be used as bath toys after reaching the destination. Finger puppets can provide laughs for parents and babies.
Toddlers
Toddlers are more mobile than babies, making it more difficult for them to sit still for long periods of time. One way to keep their mind off being strapped in a car seat or airplane seat for an extended period of time is with a magnetic drawing board, such as a Magna Doodle. These boards offer a mess-free alternative to packing paper and markers or crayons. Play-Doh or modeling clay can provide a hands-on diversion for antsy toddlers.
School-Agers
An inexpensive deck of cards can do the trick to keep parents and their school-age kids enthralled on the go. Brush up on classic card games like Go Fish, War, Slap Jack and Crazy Eights before your departure. For girls, small doll sets like Polly Pockets and the Littlest Pet Shop provide imaginative fun, yet don't take up much luggage space. Legos are another easy-to-haul options for boys and girls.
Tweens and Teens
For older kids, nothing beats electronics while riding in a car or an airplane. A portable DVD player, a collection of DVDs and a set of headphones may seem like a lifesaver to a teen trapped with parents on vacation. Mp3 players preloaded with music and movies are another option. For parents that want their kids more engaged in the vacation, giving tweens and teens their own camera to document the trip can be a good idea, as well. Kids can use down-time in the car or airplane to experiment with on-camera editing options.
