Manly Baby Gifts

The arrival of a baby often means gifts. While women often do the baby shopping, men sometimes would like to contribute but don't know where to start. Part of the problem arises from the different attitudes women and men have toward shopping. Researchers from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, for example, learned that "for men, shopping is a mission. They are out to buy a targeted item and flee the store as quickly as possible." A few simple ideas can help men get off the sidelines and well on their way toward finding the perfect gift.
  1. Sports Clothing

    • Check out the catalog or web page of your favorite sports team for baby items. Choosing essentials such as bibs, hats, booties, onesies and tees is a great way to help create a next-generation fan.

    Sports Equipment

    • Give toy sports equipment. Present the baby with bats, balls and helmets made out of cloth-covered foam. Placing the items just out of reach will entice younger babies to practice reaching and older infants to make an effort to crawl, as they'll be fascinated by the colors and shapes.

    Construction Gear

    • Pick up a baby tool kit. Encourage a love for building that can grow along with the baby. Most kits can be found in plush cloth or plastic, come in bright colors and contain a variety of tools, such as hammers, wrenches and measuring tape. Include large blocks for stacking.

    Mobiles

    • Tempt a baby with a creative mobile. Visually stimulate a baby with items like superheroes, farm animals, trains and cars, baseballs and footballs, and other interesting themes overhead. Select a mobile with a soothing melody, to give the baby another way to enjoy the gift.

    Transportation

    • Captivate a baby with transportation-themed toys. Buy oversized, brightly colored cars, trains and planes to help a baby learn colors and different modes of transportation. Later, these can pushed and pulled, helping a baby develop motor skills.

    Cloth and Board Books

    • Build a love for reading with cloth and board books. Make it fun and easy for children to learn colors and identify common objects, as well as to practice grasping and carrying, as these books are a perfect fit for little hands.
