How to Create Toy Boats

Creating a toy boat with your child can be accomplished by using some items you find around your house. Recycle a cake mix or cereal box to make this craft. The boat, although not seaworthy, can give your little one hours of imaginative fun. Add a few plastic pirate figures and toy cannons to inspire your little pirate and his playmates.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay an empty cereal or cake mix box flat on your work surface. Draw an arc shape on the front face of the box. Begin at the middle of one of the edges of the box, and make an arc going to the opposite side. Repeat on the back of the box.

    • 2

Cut the box along the arcs to create the body of the boat. Then staple the end flaps of the box.

    • 3

Paint the box inside and out with brown acrylic paint.

    • 4

Add details to the boat with a permanent marker to create the look of wood, an anchor and portholes. Add the ship's name if you like.

    • 5

Cut a large rectangular shape from black construction paper for the sail. Cut a pennant shape for a pirate flag.

    • 6

Use white poster paint to create a skull and crossbones on the sail. Add your own designs to the pirate flag.

    • 7

Punch a hole at the top and bottom of the sail. Thread the sail onto a thin wooden dowel, leaving space at the top to attach the flag. Secure the sail and flag to the dowel with tape.

    • 8

Roll a chunk of clay into a ball. Attach the clay to the bottom of the boat with craft glue. Push the wooden dowel mast into the clay.
