How to Make Puddle Jumpers

Puddle jumpers, also known as can-stilts, are an inexpensive and easy way for the whole family to have fun while making crafts and acting silly. Kids, with a little help and supervision of a responsible adult, can make them themselves and decorate to their liking.

Things You'll Need

  • Two large unopened juice cans
  • Two long pieces of rope
  • Scissors
  • Bottle opener

Instructions

    • 1

Punch two holes in each juice can with a bottle opener. Make sure they're near the top of the can and that they're on opposite sides of each other.

    • 2

Drain all of the juice from the cans. Hold the cans under a sink faucet to rinse with water. If you prefer to use old paint cans instead of juice cans, you can use ones that have already been opened. Just make sure you punch the holes near the unopened side of the paint can.

    • 3

Allow the insides of the cans to dry overnight.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of rope. Make sure they are long enough to reach from your child's hands to their feet when tied into a loop. This means that each piece of rope, when untied, should be at least twice the length from their hand to their foot.

    • 5

Thread one rope through both holes in one can. Repeat with the other rope.

    • 6

Pull the ends of the rope together and tie in a knot. The rope will now be a loop with the cans threaded on it.

    • 7

Decorate the cans however you like. You can let the child paint the cans, put their favorite stickers on or glue on construction paper.
