How do I Make an Air Bazooka?

Despite its military name, there's nothing violent or destructive about an air bazooka. The air bazooka or "airzooka" shoots a harmless puff of air by using a flexible membrane to push it out of a hole. This air burst travels surprisingly far; a well built air bazooka can put out a candle from 20 feet away and send unsuspecting cats bolting from across the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a box about 1 foot square. It should be open at the top and closed at the bottom.

    • 2

Fold all four flaps on the open end inward so they are flush against the sides of the box.

    • 3

Cut a 6-inch-diameter hole in the closed end with a craft knife.

    • 4

Reinforce the edges of the hole with duct tape where the outer flaps of the bottom meet. This will prevent the flaps from coming apart.

    • 5

Make a cross out of two 5-inch strips of duct tape on the middle of an unopened trash bag. Make a second X overlapping the first but offset 45 degrees. The two Xs should look like an asterisk together.

    • 6

Flip the bag over and make another duct tape asterisk directly above the first.

    • 7

Lay the bag flat over the open top of the box so that the asterisk is right in the middle. Press the bag down so that it sags about 4 inches into the box at the center.

    • 8

Tape the bag to the outside of the box with duct tape. Tape all the way around to create an airtight seal.

    • 9

Reach into the box and thread a screw hook through the center of the tape asterisk. Screw it into a small block of wood about 1 inch in diameter. The wood block should be outside the box in the center of the asterisk.

    • 10

Cut a small slit in the side of the box, about 5 inches down from the top in the middle of one side. Cut a second slit in the middle of the opposite side.

    • 11

Put a small piece of dowel (2-3 inches in length) through the center of a large rubber band. Thread the rubber band through the slit so the dowel is against the outside of the box, held there by the tension of the rubber band.

    • 12

Thread the band through the second slit and around a second small dowel. It should be stretched taught across the middle of the box.

    • 13

Hook the screw hook on the rubber band. Put a piece of masking tape over each dowel to hold them in place, and seal the slits to stop air from leaking.

    • 14

Pull back on the wooden block and release it. The rubber band will pull it down, sending a jet of air out of the hole in the bottom of the box for several yards.
