The Differences Between Airsoft Pellets & Pellets

Airsoft guns, meaning guns that fire ammunition by means of compressed air instead of by burning a propellant, can shoot airsoft pellets, which are made from plastic, or pellets such as BBs, which are made from lead or other metallic materials. The main difference between airsoft pellets and other pellets is their physical composition.
  1. Plastic vs. Metal

    • Airsoft pellets are made of plastic or other non-metallic materials. Pellets are made from lead or other metallics such as steel or copper. Airsoft pellets are also designed to have a low impact on their target unlike pellets. Pellets can be deadly depending on their caliber. Pellets may also inflict surface wounds on animals; airsoft pellets will leave a bruise or burning sensation in most instances.

    Calibers &Restrictions

    • Airsoft pellets are limited to a 6mm pellet. Other pellets, however, come in a variety of calibers such as .20, .22, .25 and 9mm. Many states restrict the use and possession of airsoft guns and the caliber. Check local laws before buying or using an air soft gun.

    Hunting &Recreational Use

    • In the U.S., airsoft guns and airsoft pellets are exclusively for recreational purposes since they usually do not cause much harm to their target. Thus, airsoft guns and airsoft pellets are never for hunting. However, pellet guns, particularly higher end pellet guns are sometimes used for hunting and recreational use.
