How to Tighten a Yoyo

A yoyo is a popular toy that is enjoyed by children and adults alike. A yoyo's spinning action, unique pulley system and scientific design make it an enjoyable toy for performing tricks. At times, a yoyo can lose its tension and rebounding mechanism due to a loose string. In order to tighten a yoyo string, untangling often strengthens and tightens the string. On occasion, the yoyo will need to be disassembled in order to tighten the string.

Instructions

    • 1

Untangle the string. Slip the loop of the yoyo string over your middle finger as if you were going to perform a trick. Drop the yoyo and allow it to rest at the end of the string. Do not yank on the string to pull the yoyo back up. Allow the string to untangle as the yoyo spins freely at the bottom of the string.

    • 2

Wait until the yoyo completely stops spinning. The untangling of the string will automatically reset the needed tension in the string. Avoid trying to untangle the string by hand. Allow the weight of the yoyo and the spinning action tighten the string.

    • 3

Disassemble the yoyo. If untangling the string doesn't tighten the string enough, you will have to disassemble the toy. Spin the top of the yoyo in a counterclockwise direction as you spin the bottom of the yoyo in a clockwise direction. Pull gently to separate the two pieces. Do not touch the ball bearings or the mechanisms in the yoyo.

Unwrap six inches of string. Use your index finger and thumb to slowly unwind six inches of string. Pull slightly on the string as you are unwinding it to increase the tension. Wind the string back around the spool using a tight pulling motion to keep the string taut. Avoid stretching the string by pulling too hard.

Replace the top and bottom portions of the yoyo. Rotate the top of the yoyo in a clockwise motion while turning the bottom of the yoyo in a counterclockwise direction. Slip your finger through the pre-made loop and begin using the yoyo.
