How to Build a Toy Kitchen

A toy kitchen can provide hours of imaginative fun for young children. You cuold buy pre-made sets with sound effects and flashing lights, but making your own with your child can provide an afternoon of fun. Built from wood or cardboard, the design can be simple or complex, as determined by the skill of the creator. Wood kitchen sets will last a bit longer, but are more complex to make and require the use of tools such as drills, saws and a hammer. Be creative when choosing the details of the kitchen. This model includes a sink, stove and refrigerator. A microwave or kitchen counter can be added if space is available.

Instructions

  1. Sink

    • 1

Use a medium-size cardboard box for the sink. Tape all sides of the box closed with duct tape. Cover the outside of the entire box with contact paper.

    • 2

Lay the bowl upside-down on the top of the box so the bowl is centered. Verify there is a four-inch space behind the bowl where the faucet will be for the sink. If there isn't, move the bowl toward the front of the box. Trace around the bowl with a pencil. Use the utility knife to cut out along the inside edge of the circle traced on the top of the box. Cut strips of contact paper and apply around the cut edges of the circle to add strength. Set the bowl inside the circle. The edge should lay flush with the box top. If the bowl does not stay in the cut hole, add more contact paper to make the hole slightly smaller.

    • 3

Place a paper towel roll behind the sink where you want the faucet to be. The roll should sit vertically. Trace around the paper towel roll to mark the spot on top of the box.

    • 4

Cover the roll with aluminum foil to create a silvered look. Shape additional aluminum foil to create the end of the faucet in the desired shape. Many kitchen faucets have an inverted U shape to them. Glue the aluminum foil to the paper towel roll.

    • 5

Place the paper towel roll back on top of the box in the previously marked spot, and glue in place. Glue one top from a two-liter bottle on the left of the faucet and one on the right. These are the knobs for the hot and cold water.

    Oven

    • 6

Use a medium-size cardboard box for the oven. Tape all sides of the box closed with duct tape. Cover the outside of this box completely with contact paper.

    • 7

Measure four inches down from the top of the box on the front side, and draw a line horizontally across the front of the box with the pencil. This is the top of the oven door. Measure three inches in from the left side along the front of the box and draw a vertical line on the front of the box. Repeat this measurement from the right side of the box and draw a second vertical line on the front of the box. Measure four inches up from the bottom of the box and draw a horizontal line across the front of the box. This should create a rectangle on the front of the stove.

    • 8

Cut along the top horizontal line and down both vertical lines. Bend the flap out at the bottom horizontal line. This is the stove door. Cover all cut edges with additional contact paper to increase the strength.

    • 9

Glue four blank CDs on the top of the stove for the burners. Glue four milk carton caps on the front of the box above the oven door for the burner knobs. Glue a paper towel roll horizontally onto the front of the oven on the door. This is the handle to open and close the door.

    • 10

Cut the strip of Velcro into a length of four inches. Separate the Velcro strip into its two sides, and glue one on the inside of the oven along the top edge of the oven opening so at least two inches hangs down into the oven. Glue the other part of the strip onto the inside of the oven door horizontally so that it overlaps the strip hanging on the inside of the oven. The Velcro will hold the oven door shut when it is closed.

    Refrigerator

    • 11

Use a large cardboard box for the refrigerator. Tape all sides shut with duct tape. Set the box so its long side is vertical. Cover the entire outside of the box with contact paper

    • 12

Measure two inches down from the top of the box on the front of the refrigerator and draw a horizontal line across the front with the pencil. Measure up two inches from the bottom of the box on the front of the refrigerator and draw a horizontal line across the front with the pencil.

    • 13

Use the utility knife to cut along both horizontal lines. Cut along a vertical corner between the two horizontal cuts on one side of the box, but not both sides. This will create the door for the refrigerator. Cut strips of contact paper and apply to the edges of the door to add strength.

    • 14

Glue a paper towel roll to the front of the refrigerator door to use as a handle to open and close the door. Stack small boxes inside the refrigerator with the open side facing the door to create shelves.
