How to Make Yarn Marionettes

An amusing way to play with your child is by making homemade yarn marionettes for puppet shows. Because creating standard marionettes is a somewhat complicated task for the novice puppet maker, starting with a yarn doll is a good way to ease into the process. Making the puppet is half the fun, since yarn puppets are so easy to make, even a young child can do it. Decorate the puppet with your child, then give the puppet movement by attaching strings. Yarn marionettes are inexpensive to make, since the materials needed are sold cheap at most craft stores.

Instructions

  1. Making the Puppet

    • 1

Unravel the yarn into a chunk about 1 and 1/2 inches thick and 24 inches long. Fold the chunk in half. Cut five pieces of yarn long enough to tie around the folded chunk.

    • 2

Tie a piece of yarn tightly about 1 inch from the folded top of the chunk. Tie another piece between 1-and-1/2 and 2 inches below the first tie-off. This is the head. Secure the third piece about 3 inches below the second tie-off, which creates the body.

    • 3

Pull the remaining loose yarn apart so that there are two equal halves, or legs. Tie the last two pieces of yarn about an inch from the bottom of each leg. Cut off the excess yarn from each tie-off.

    • 4

Cut through the looped yarn at the top. This is the hair. Cut through the yarn loops at the feet.

    • 5

Unravel yarn into a chunk about 1 inch thick and 9 inches long. Cut three pieces of yarn long enough to be tied around the chunk. Tie a piece about 1 inch from each end of the yarn chunk. Tie a piece around the center of the chunk. Cut off excess yarn from each tie-off, then cut through the looped yarn at each end.

    • 6

Poke your finger sideways through the upper portion of the body. Slide the yarn chunk through the body so that about 3 inches poke out from each side. These are the arms.

    • 7

Decorate the puppet with googly eyes, glitter, sequins or bows. Dress the puppet in doll clothes if desired. Let the puppet dry.

    Attaching Strings

    • 8

Cut the dowel rod into two 6-inch pieces. Cross the rods so that one rod is about 2 inches from the top of the other rod. Wind fishing line around the center of the rods and knot it to secure the cross. Place the cross on a flat surface so that the short end is pointing up and the overlapping rod is at the bottom.

    • 9

Screw one screw eye into the center of the vertical rod, two screw eyes about 1 inch from the ends of the horizontal rod and the last screw eye into the center of where the dowel rods cross.

    • 10

Thread a piece of fishing line through a sewing needle. Push the needle through the top of the puppet head down to the end of the body. Knot the end of the thread around a few pieces of yarn in the inside of the body.

    • 11

Hold the other end of the fishing line up to mid-torso and stand up. Pull the puppet up so that its feet are touching the floor. Cut the end of the string with a few inches extra.

    • 12

String the end of the fishing line through the screw eye in the center of the vertical rod and up through the screw eye in the center of the cross. Tie the fishing line to the screw eye in the center of the cross. Hang the puppet from a door or chair.

    • 13

Tie one end of fishing line to the bottom of the right foot. Pull the fishing line up to the screw eye on the right end of the horizontal rod. Make the line taut, but keep the foot on the ground. Cut the line with a few inches to spare, then tie it to the right-end screw eye. Repeat this for the left foot and attach to the left screw eye.

    • 14

Attach one end of fishing line to the fingers of the right hand. Pull the line up to the screw eye on the right end of the horizontal rod, ensuring the arm rests to the side. Cut the line with a few inches to spare, and tie it to the screw eye on the right. Repeat this for the left arm and attach it to the left screw eye.
