Outdoor Toy Ideas for Active Boys

There are many outdoor toys for active boys to help them have fun while using up some of that excess energy. Some outdoor toys are old favorites or favorites with a new twist, such as all-season sleds, hip-wiggling scooters, water slides with loads of sprayers and T-less batting arms. These toys are for boys of all ages, though some of the products have age, height and weight restrictions.
  1. Scooters

    • Active boys will enjoy traditional kick scooters.

Traditional kick scooters are an excellent way for active boys to expend energy. A traditional scooter looks like a skateboard with a long pole leading to handlebars. To ride a kick scooter, place one foot on the scooter and the other foot on the ground, using the foot on the ground to propel the scooter forward. Once your speed has increased, you can put the foot that was on the ground onto the back of the board and coast for short periods of time.

Scooters come in many different sizes, colors and designs. The designs come in a variety of name-brand styles ranging from Hot Rods, Harley-Davidson, Spider-Man and many more. The length and width of the scooter can vary. If your son has never been on or has limited experience with a scooter, you will want to purchase a wider and longer board. This will make is easier for him to balance.

Razor Powerwing Caster Scooter is a different type of kick scooter. This scooter has the same pole leading up to handlebars but instead of the board, there are two wing-like protrusions. To operate the Powerwing Caster Scooter, you place both feet on the wing-like protrusions and wiggle your hips from side to side. This propels the scooter forward. The faster you wiggle your hips, the quicker the scooter goes.

    Ball Pits or Bounce Houses

    • Toddlers love playing with all the balls in the ball pit.

Ball pits are tent-like structures with 100 to 250 balls and can be used indoors or outdoors. Your son will climb into the tent and jump up and down while throwing the balls around inside the tent. Inevitably, balls will escape the tent. The fun continues when your son goes outside the ball tent and throws the balls back through the open top of the tent. Slam dunks will definitely require a parent or an older sibling's assistance. Ball pits are made for children in the toddler stage.

Bounce houses, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes, requires large, flat spaces and come with air pumps for inflation. The age and weight limit varies depending on the style you purchase. Some have ball pits; others have slides with ladders to climb up. Still others require water to help propel you down the slide. All have some sort of netting to keep the children within the bouncing area. The bounce house develops large motor skills and allows your active boy to safely bounce, somersault and slide around.

    Water Slides

    • Disney's Finding Nemo's Big Splash Water Slide allows your active child to slide down the slick, 16-foot mat that lies flat in your backyard. Parents may be reminded of the Slip 'N Slide of their youth. Water sprays help keep him sliding all the way along the slide. Active boys will enjoy the sliding as well as the anticipation of doing it again as they run back to the beginning of the slide.

    Baseball Equipment

    • A bat and three balls are included with Better Batter Baseball.

Fisher-Price makes a Better Batter Baseball. Instead of the usual tee ball stand, the Better Batter Baseball loads a baseball when the plate is tapped with the bat. The ball swings from a mechanical arm that is height adjustable for children ages 3 to 5. Additionally, there are sound effects and music for your active youngster to practice his baseball swing. A bat and three balls are included.

    Slicer All-Season Sled

    • This sled is great for any season and any age. It looks like a typical sled when you sit down; however, underneath are two trays that you fill with water and place in the freezer. Once the water is frozen, you attach them to the bottom of the sled and ride down the hill in any weather. This sled works better when the temperature is above 78 degrees but will function any time. There is a 200-pound weight limit.
