Safety of Plastic Tinker Toys

Tinker toys, or small plastic toys, can pose as a health hazard to small children. Extra small tinker toys should not be played with by children who put toys in their mouth; it is a choking hazard. There are others rules you can follow to promote safe playing habits.
  1. Lead

    • Newer tinker toys do not contain lead based paint. However, stay away from hand-me-down toys from long ago. Some companies used lead-based paint on their toys before lead was banned.

    Sharp Edges

    • Do not purchase plastic tinker toys with sharp edges or points. These edges can damage eyes, scratch skin or cause other harm.

    Read Labels

    • Read tinker toy labels. These labels will tell you what age is appropriate for this toy, how to clean it and other useful information.

    Broken Toys

    • Broken plastic tinker toys should be repaired or thrown away. Parts may be loose and can be a choking hazard.

    Cleaning

    • Plastic tinker toys can be gently washed with warm water and soap. You can also let them soak for 10 minutes in a bucket of water with a very small amount of bleach. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
