Types of Waiting Room Toys

Keeping children occupied while waiting for an important appointment can sometimes be a difficult task without the right kind of activities and toys. Many pediatrician and other doctor offices have toys already there for children, and in some cases parents can bring small toys for the child to play with while waiting. Some of the most common waiting room toys include play tables, books, wall toys, activity mats and wire and bead toys.
  1. Play Tables

    • Play tables are great for waiting rooms because they allow multiple children to play at the same time. Most tables have room for four children to partake in the activity at the same time and may also come with additional chairs. Play tables have a wide variety of different activities such as magnets, beads, drawing and puzzles. Play tables can vary greatly in price depending on the number of activities and size of the table; generally they run anywhere from $90 to $1,200 according to Sensory Edge, a designer of children's games.

    Wall Toys

    • Wall toys are another great way to keep children in a lobby occupied. They are also great at saving space and are very easy to clean. Wall toys also have a large variety of types such as puzzles, drawing, painting, chalking, mirror games, magnets and more. Prices for wall toys range from $50 to $400 per play set.

    Activity Mats

    • Activity mats are great for larger lobbies as they can take up a significant amount of space. These mats are often 3-dimensional, containing multiple levels to climb on. Some play mats also contain several separate pieces similar to building blocks. Activity mats, depending on the size, can cost a significant amount ranging from $90 up to $1,300.

    Wire and Bead Toys

    • Wire and bead toys are a classic choice when it comes to waiting rooms. This toy consists of several wires in a maze with beads connected to them; the child plays with this toy by moving the beads up and down the wires. These toys are generally small enough to fit on a tiny table or stool. Wire and bead toys generally cost anywhere from $15 to $100.

    Books

    • Books can also do a good job of keeping kids occupied as long as they are interactive. Some good types of interactive books include pop-up books, electronic books and picture books. Choose books that are as simple as possible and contain lots of pictures; this way children of all ages can enjoy them.
