Directions for Making Silly Putty

Silly Putty is a slimy, gooey substance that is a classic childhood toy. Silly Putty was invented by James Wright in 1943 and was an immediate success. The substance can bounce and is often used by children to copy newspaper print and pictures. It is a simple recipe and can be made at home.
  1. What You Need

    • You will need a bottle of all-purpose glue, liquid starch, a large mixing bowl and food coloring to make the putty. All of these items can be purchased at any large food store for under $10.

    Right Color

    • Pour 2 cups of glue into a large bowl. This can be a messy recipe, so a larger bowl is better to contain the gooey mess that you will be creating. Add food coloring to the glue until you get the color you desire. Silly Putty is dark red, so this is the most common color to use.

    Use Your Hands

    • Slowly pour 1 cup of liquid starch into the bowl. This should be done gradually while stirring and mixing the glue with your hands. This is a fun project to do with kids because they enjoy using their hands to mix the slimy goo around in the bowl. You will have to mix the concoction together for about 15 minutes to get the consistency of Silly Putty.

    Perfect the Mixture

    • Pour more glue into the bowl if the putty is thicker than you prefer. You also can add more starch, if necessary. Making Silly Putty is not an exact science, so experiment until the mixture is to your liking. Store the finished product in an airtight container.
