How to Make a Toy Storage for Kids

Toy storage in this day and age can be difficult, especially if your child's room is small. Large toy chests and containers placed on the floor takes up valuable play space. Also, toy chests with hinges can be a danger to small children; fingers can be pinched in hinges or smashed under the chest door. One way to avoid all of these issues is to use soft drop bags made from recycled materials for toy storage. Drop bags not only make playtime safe, but they are cost-efficient and make cleanups easier. Plus, these storage bags are wall-mounted, giving your child as much floor space as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your choice of fabric on the floor. Measure a circle at least 60 inches in diameter. Mark the edges of the circle with the marker. Don't worry; the circle does not have to be perfect.

    • 2

Cut out the circle of fabric. Lay the circle on top of a second piece of fabric and trace around it using the marker. Doing this will ensure that both circles are equal. Cut out the second circular piece of fabric.

    • 3

Pin the two fabric circles together. Keep in mind that the right sides of both circles should be facing each other.

    • 4

Sew a half-inch seam around the edges of the fabric circles, but leave a 2-inch opening.

    • 5

Turn the fabric circles right-side out through the 2-inch opening, then hand-stitch the opening closed.

    • 6

Stitch a line all the way around the circles about 1 1/2 inches from the edge. This will be the casing for the nylon cord.

    • 7

Make a small vertical cut between the two lines of stitching of the fabric circles. Do not cut through the stitching, or it will unravel.

    • 8

Measure a length of nylon cord that is a little bit longer than the perimeter of the circle. String the length of cord through opening and push it through the casing until both ends meet. Knot the ends together.

    • 9

Mount a wall peg or hat rack onto the wall using either screws or nails. Hat racks, key pegs and coat pegs can be found at resale shops or purchased in kit form at stores. Kits usually include screws. Fill the drop bag with toys and hang it from the peg.
