Homemade Squirt Guns

Among kids' favorite summertime toys are squirt guns. It does not matter what kind of squirt gun it is as long as it gets them wet, keeps them cool and provides hours of "target practice." However, squirt guns can get quite expensive and we can't always spare the extra cash. This article will show you and your children how to make squirt guns for little or no money.
  1. Materials

    • One method of making a homemade squirt gun is to save your empty spray bottles (once you have used all the glass cleaner, of course). For parents who are uncomfortable letting your children play with guns, spray bottles are the perfect alternative and they hold a lot of water. If you don't want to use spray bottles from under your kitchen sink, you can purchase spray bottles at your local dollar store for $1 each.

You can also buy squeeze bottles, the type used for ketchup and mustard. These don't hold as much water as the spray bottles, but the harder you squeeze, the harder and farther they spray. These squeeze bottles can also be purchased at a dollar store for $1.

    Procedures

    • If you're using spray bottles from underneath your kitchen sink, be sure to rinse the bottles well with hot soapy water to make sure there is no chemical residue. You may want to do this a couple of times just to make sure you've gotten the bottles clean.

If you're buying bottles from the dollar store, simply give them a good hot water rinse to clean them out. Once you have cleaned the bottles thoroughly, fill them with cold water and chase your kids around the yard. Get your shots in now, because once the kids get the water, it's all over for you.

    Cautions

    • Spray bottles that once contained chemicals can be harmful to children if not thoroughly rinsed. If, after squirting each other with water from these bottles, your children come to you red-eyed, with a rash or vomiting, call poison control and seek immediate medical attention.

Keep your children safe by supervising their play. The safer they are, the happier they are and the happier you are.
