Toys
Typical toys chosen by 6-year-old girls involve fantasy. They like to pretend to be their parents or a professional they admire (doctor, nurse, firefighter or sales clerk). This is why dolls, toy kitchen sets, doctor kits, kid-size professional uniforms and play money are popular among this age group.
Shiny and Pretty
Many little girls go for the glam with anything shiny and pretty. A hot pink purse with rhinestone accents likely is to appeal to her. She'll like a set of costume jewelry with a sparkling necklace, bracelet and ring to match. If her fine motor skills are on par with her age, she'll enjoy beading supplies designed for children.
Educational
Learning doesn't have to be boring or tedious. Little girls often enjoy playing school with friends, pets or stuffed animals. An easel, white board, markers, crayons and plenty of paper will help the little "teacher" with her "class." Etch-A-Sketch, paint by number, early-learner science kits, sewing cards, electronic keyboards, CD players, radios and books are favorites among this age group.
Sporty
By the age of 6, most girls have developed their gross motor skills well enough to ride a bicycle (some with training wheels), hop without falling and kick a ball. Find out if the girl has expressed interest in a particular sport or physical activity, and give her a related piece of equipment. For example, if she's passionate about riding her bicycle, she'll enjoy a pretty helmet with her name engraved on it.
Decor
Many little girls like to decorate their personal space. Whether she has her own room or one side of a shared bedroom, find out what cartoon characters or theme she likes, and give her something to put on display. Some ideas for room decor are lamps, framed posters, telephones, wall decorations, rugs and bedspreads.
Clothes
As girls develop, they become more interested in fashion and how they look. Many 6-year-olds want to emulate their favorite character on television or from a movie. Since this is so child-specific, the parents will need to be consulted first for size, style and appropriateness.
