Investigate portable or home game systems. If the seven year old is always on the go, a Nintendo DSi or Sony Playstation Portable may be a good choice. If they already have a portable system, then some new games would be a great gift. There are 3 home game systems to choose from including the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Sony Playstation 3. If they already have one of these systems, then they will probably appreciate a new game.
Look for Pokemon playing cards or videos. Pokemon is on a huge upturn again in the United States. Boys in this age group typically like Pokemon and may play and trade the Pokemon cards at school. The cards they typically want are the ones with the highest value one the front of the card (anything over 100 is typically good). They also like any card that does a lot of damage. There is a damage value on the front of the card, any value over 40 is typically pretty good. Most boys like to collect the level "X" cards. These cards are insert cards in most packs, but tin containers usually have a minimum of 1 level X per box.
Ask them what sports they are interested in playing. Find some equipment or training aids in the sports or their choice. Most boys this age are interested in playing multiple sports, so it may be easy to get some ideas for a gift.
Get a Webkinz animal for them. Webkinz are stuffed animals slightly larger than beanie babies. The great thing about these toys are they have a code to access an online world. The kids take care of their pet online and have to play games, suitable for younger children, and other activities which to earn Kinz cash. Kids then use the Kinz cash to buy food, clothes, and build a house for their pet.
Look into the ever popular Lego sets. Boys this age are able to put together some pretty complex sets. There are some great themed sets that boys this age may enjoy like Lego City, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. Find out if they are interested in any of these themes. If the 7 year old is an experience Lego user, then consider on the newer motorized sets that are programmable or the Mindstorms NXT robotic sets. These sets cost a little more, but their playing time will be much more as the 7 year old grows up.
Find out if the 7 year old has transportation. Boys this age love to get around and it is healthy for them to burn off some energy rather than sit in front of a video game. You can try a bike, scooter, skateboard, or longboard to help them get around.
Ask if they like action figures. There are some good options depending on the shows are character they like. Try Batman, Star Wars, transformers, or GI Joe. There is probably a good gift in one of these categories for any 7 year old boy.
