Do measure the doll to determine proper clothing size. There are several manufacturers and pattern makers that provide generic versions of clothes that fit many of the baby dolls. However, you do need to be aware of the size of your dolls as you will soon learn one size does not fit all dolls.
There are wider ranges of patterns and older books available for generic baby doll patterns. Check with family and friends to see what gems may be hidden in old magazines and craft books that have not been used in a while. The old patterns often can be adapted to fit the newer dolls with minor adjustments for size issues. Check with those who knit, crochet, and sew. The baby doll market has been around for a very long time.
Local libraries are a good place to check for craft books. Also check out the local resale market in yard sales, library used books sales, and local senior center sales. I have found amazing craft books at senior center sales on things that have long been out of print. They also often have yarn and other craft materials that people are looking to dispose of as they down size. Do consider checking them out.
While at these sales, look for material that can be reused for doll clothing. Baby clothes are often a good starting point for doll clothes. Baby blankets convert nicely into doll patterns. These things are often sold inexpensively at yard sales. Find a place to hold both pieces you save yourself and those you acquire through sales to have when you are ready to start projects.
I have listed some free patterns from the Internet below. The free sites have more limited selections than those you pay for but they are a great place to start your search. Craft and fabric stores also carry sewing patterns as well as knitting and crochet patterns to make the doll clothes. These can be ordered from Internet sites as well and there are resources listed for those as well.
Do consider working with others to increase your access to patterns. Knitting circles have long been a tradition that gathers to share patterns and skills. There is no reason not to develop a group that shares a love of making doll's clothes that is also willing to share resources and strategies for improving the hobby. Everyone learns and saves a bit of money through sharing time and resources.
