Features
Lincoln Log sets come in different sizes, but they all feature the basic set up. All of the Lincoln Log pieces feature cut-out rivets in them in order to provide construction points for the sets. The longest pieces are known as the base pieces. These pieces are used mainly as the foundation for a project. They feature a flattened bottom in order to keep the structure steady. Regular pieces are the same size as the base pieces, but they have more flexibility and can be used during any section of a Lincoln Log construction. Mini Lincoln Log pieces are used to fill gaps, extend areas, or add more details like door frames and windows.
Function
Lincoln Logs work by using a cross-layering pattern with the logs. For example, a simple box-shaped house would start out with two parallel log pieces evenly spread apart. Two other pieces would lay across them in the opposite direction so that the rivets evenly matched up and they sat into each other. This process would continue until the structure is as tall as it needs to be or another object needs to interrupt like a smaller piece. Accessories like windows, doors and roofs are made to fit into the pieces as well.
Types
Classic sets can be found online at auction websites, but Lincoln Logs are still sold new from the K'nex company. Some of their Lincoln Log sets include the Frontier Firehouse, Frontier Lookout, the Farmstead, Fort Redwood, and a classic series known as the Collector's Edition. Each set features a different amount of building logs and some come with extras like animals and cowboys.
History
Lincoln Logs were originally released in 1916. They had a huge success when they first came out and that only expanded after World War II. The toys were used for both fun and education when they were first built, because the construction of the logs taught children basic architectural skills and hand-eye coordination. In the 1970s, the logs were changed to plastic for a short period, but that was abandoned because of a increased demand for the classic logs.
Benefits
Other than the 1970s, all of the Lincoln Log sets are made of 100 percent wood. This makes them durable for all kinds of playing. The wooden logs are sturdy enough to hold other toys and the construction process that goes into playing with the logs creates strong structures. Using them now can introduce children to toys of the past and show them why they are so popular today.
