How to Build a Kid's Playhouse

Instead of wood and nails, this child's playhouse is made with fabric and a card table. One advantage to this playhouse is the ability to easily store it when playtime is over. This project will require five rectangular or square pieces of fabric. Four pieces will be the same size; the fifth piece will be the same size as the card table's top.

Things You'll Need

  • Card table, square shaped
  • Fabric
  • Thread and needles
  • Embroidery thread
  • Appliqué and embellishments

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the card table. If the tabletop measures 40 inches on all sides, add an inch to the measurement and cut a square piece of fabric that measures 41 inches by 41 inches. This piece of fabric will be the roof of the playhouse.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the tabletop and add one inch. Use the measurement in the previous step (plus the one inch) for the width of the fabric, and the measurement from the floor to the top edge of the tabletop (plus one inch) for each of the four remaining pieces of fabric. If the measurement from the floor to the tabletop is 36 inches, you will cut four pieces of fabric, each 41 inches wide by 37 inches high.

    • 3

Lay out the pieces of fabric with a rectangle next to each side of the roof's fabric, as pictured in the illustration.

    • 4

On the reverse side of the fabric, sew each of the four panels to the roof panel, as pictured in the illustration. Make a ¼-inch seam. After all four panels are sewed to the roof panel, hem the entire perimeter.

    • 5

Embellish the outside of the playhouse by adding embroidered flowers and appliquéd windows and doors. Use your imagination. When the house is completed, lay it over the card table, with the roof panel over the tabletop and the side panels hanging to the floor.
