Instructions

    • 1

Buy a long, straight-handled wooden mixing spoon with a nearly flat "bowl" that is smaller than 2 inches. The bowl is the part of the spoon that you place in your mouth. Also buy different sizes of heavy and lightweight construction paper in various colors.

    • 2

Stack together two to three sheets of 8 1/2 by 11 inch heavy weight construction paper, and tape all four sides.

    • 3

Fold the paper three times lengthwise in folds of approximately 2 inches each time to make a hilt sleeve.

    • 4

Hold the sleeve in your dominant hand, and gauge by sight how long the hilt should be. Cut off the excess paper and then wrap duct tape around the sleeve and one end until the paper is thick and stable enough to fit comfortably in your hand. Leave one end of the sleeve open so that the bowl of your spoon can fit into it.

    • 5

Push the bowl of your spoon into the open end of the hilt sleeve, leaving most of the handle outside of the sleeve. Stuff lightweight paper into any open areas around the bowl inside of the sleeve to hold the spoon in place, and twist two long pieces of paper into 90-degree L-shaped forms to extend out from inside of the sleeve with the long part of each L horizontal to the hilt sleeve and opposite to each other--this is the pommel of your sword. Tape the sleeve and pommel to the spoon where the handle comes out of the sleeve through the pommel. Tape the hilt again for stability and set aside.

    • 6

Cut construction paper into the straight sword blade style of your choice by repeating Step 2 with long paper, folding the sheet in half lengthwise and cutting the sheet along the folded edge in the same way that you would cut out paper pumpkins or apples (with the fold uncut). Once your shape is cut out, unfold the paper and completely tape all of the sheet edges together again except for the bottom where the handle will go into the sleeve. This is your blade sleeve.

    • 7

Stuff the blade sleeve with lightweight construction paper until it is nearly full. Push the spoon handle into the blade sleeve, and tape the blade sleeve to your pommel and hilt sleeve in the shape of an X going under, over and across with your tape each time.
