Determine the material you want to use for the rope of the jump rope. Wire coated in a protective elastic coating comes in a variety of colors, provides a sturdy rope and swings quickly. You can also use rectangular beads strung on a thin piece of rope or heavy duty stringfor a jump rope with a slower swing that's durable in cold weather. Use a material that can hold up to hitting the ground repeatedly without damage.
Measure the length of rope you need. The rope should easily clear your head without dragging excessively on the ground. Multiply your height in inches by 1.5 and you should have an appropriate measurement for the total length of your jump rope. You can also use an old jump rope to get the right length. To adjust a long jump rope, wrap the excess rope around the palm of your hands.
Pick a handle. While it isn't essential to have handles, most people find the jump rope fits comfortable on their hands when the rope has handles. If you're using your jump rope to exercise, you should consider weighted handles to increase your workout. These typically weigh two or five pounds each. Longer rectangular beads used as handles complement a beaded jump rope. You could also use wood handles.
By the products you've chosen and assemble your jump rope. If you use beads, you need to string the beads on the rope before adding the handles. Otherwise thread each end of the rope through a handle and secure it with a well tied knot.
