Super Spirograph Instructions

The Spirograph and Super Spirograph were geometric drawing toys released in the 1960s. It had a series of gears and frames that the user worked within. The gear and frame teeth meshed together as the user pushed a pen along to create a drawing. The gears moved the same way each time, but the movement of the pen within the gears created different patterns. The Super Spirograph had detachable segments so the user could expand the range of the gears.

Instructions

  Click together your choice of segments of the Super Spirograph to create a closed loop. For example, join the four large loop pieces together to create a single large frame.

  Lay out a sheet of paper on your work surface. Place the spirograph frame over the sheet. Position this however anywhere on the paper, but all of the artwork will take place within the frame.

  Place the gear of your choice inside or outside of the frame. The teeth on the frame must mesh with the teeth on the gear.

  Hold the frame firmly down with your non-dominant hand. Insert the Spirograph pen into one of the holes on the gear using your writing hand.

  Drag the pen toward the right side of the page, which will drag the gear with it. Let the pen tip spin with the gear and leave the Spirograph pattern on the paper. Go all the way around the frame with your design.

  Insert the pen, or a pen of another color, into the gear and repeat. The gear can be changed at this point. Repeat this process until the design is complete.
