Directions for the Crayola Crayon Maker

The Crayola Crayon Maker turns crayon bits into new, usable crayons. With the product, you melt crayon pieces, pour the liquid into molds, and let the new crayons cool and set. You can even make mixed-color crayons with swirls. Many different versions of the product have been produced. This Toy of the Year Award winner remains a popular product with both parents and children. It's a great way to recycle crayon stubs that you would otherwise toss out.

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Crayon Maker

    • 1

Remove the light bulb cover on the toy with a Phillips-head screwdriver, install a 60-watt candelabra bulb, then replace the cover.

    • 2

Install the melting plate. There are two supports on either side of the light bulb cover; the metal legs on the plate slide into these slots. Test the pouring mechanism to ensure that it works properly.

    • 3

Plug in the Crayon Maker and turn the switch to the 'on' position.

    • 4

Snap both sides of the mold together and place it in the mold slot. Lock it into place with the locking tabs.

    Making Crayons

    • 5

Place three or four unwrapped half crayons or six to eight quarter crayons in each slot of the melting tray.

    • 6

Close the lid and turn the timer to the "light on" position. The lid will lock and the crayons will begin to melt.

    • 7

Pour the melted crayons into the mold when the time reaches the "pour" symbol.

    • 8

Allow the melted crayons to cool and set. When the timer ends, the lid will unlock and you may remove the mold. Allow the crayons to set for ten more minutes before removing them from the mold.

    • 9

Turn off and unplug the toy.

    • 10

Clean the Crayon Maker when you're finished. To clean a warm melting tray, simply wipe the excess wax away with a paper towel. To remove hardened wax, remove the melting tray from the slots then scrape off any excess wax with a non-metallic scraper, to avoid scratching the plastic.
