How to Buy Crayons

Crayons are one of the most universal children's gifts and also one of the least expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand that crayons come in many sizes, shapes and colors.

    • 2

Know that crayons are one of the basic must-haves of childhood.

    • 3

Think about the child you're shopping for. Consider the child's age, interests and abilities. There are crayons designed for all ages and interests.

    • 4

Realize that Crayola is by far the most popular brand of crayon. You can be sure that if you buy Crayola crayons, you'll be receiving quality merchandise. Less well-known brands, such as Rose Art, provide crayons of equal quality. You do need to be careful with brands you're unfamiliar with, since some crayons are of such poor quality that they just won't draw.

    • 5

Buy large crayons for toddlers. These crayons are wider and easier to hold onto. Crayola's Kid's First Washable Crayons are priced at about $1.80 for an eight-pack box.

    • 6

Notice that crayons come in many different-sized boxes. You can buy between 8 and 128 crayons in one box. Bigger boxes give the child a greater color selection. Expect to spend about $1 for an eight-pack of regular crayons and about $9 for a box of 128.

    • 7

Realize that some crayons are designed with certain characters or themes in mind. For instance, a set of Blue's Clues Character Crayons is available ($3 for a six-pack).

    • 8

Be sure to look at some of the specialty crayons available. There are neon crayons, pastel crayons, glitter crayons, window crayons (for drawing on windows - $10) and scented crayons.

    • 9

Recognize that a gift of crayons may be more exciting if it comes in a specialty box or container. Crayola makes a Treasure Chest ($2.80) that holds 32 crayons. Dial Industries has a three-tier crayon cart ($20) that holds huge quantities of crayons. Crayon Critters has bird and dinosaur crayon holders ($8).

Select your crayons from the Shopping List below or from your favorite online or local retailer. Realize that you may be better off buying crayons locally since you may pay more in shipping than the price of the crayons themselves.
