How to Build a LEGO Alphabet

For some people, building LEGO projects is about the satisfaction of following a set of instructions through to completion. For others, it's about letting imagination and ingenuity guide them in fashioning their own unique creations. If you want something in between, try using LEGOs to experiment with typography. Once you have mastered the basics, you can make more stylized fonts by elongating, widening or tightening parts of the letters.

Instructions

    • 1

Make uppercase letters, as these are composed of straighter lines easier to render in LEGOs. Make the letters eight bricks high and the maximum width equivalent to a 10-stud-long LEGO brick.

    • 2

Make the vertical sections of letters such as H, L and T from columns of two-by-two bricks. Make the horizontal sections by fitting longer bricks between the columns.

    • 3

Make diagonal sections of letters such as V and W by staggering various thickness of bricks, starting with four-by-two bricks and moving to three-by-two and two-by-two. Tip the section with a two-by-one brick.

    • 4

Alternate brick colors used according to the vertical height of the brick. For example, you might make all of the bricks on the bottom level red. Place black bricks above those, then a layers of red, black and so on. Use this pattern throughout to keep a uniform style.

Construct your letters and fit them in sequence on a line of LEGO bases. Space the letters evenly on the bases with a distance of two studs between each letter.
