How to Make a Cylinder With Square Legos

Lego sculptures often appear spherical or round even though they are made with square bricks. This optical illusion is created by gradually tapering the sides of structures by one unit at a time. The three-dimensional forms created with this method will not actually be round, but they will appear so from afar or under certain lighting. You can also modify the shape of the bricks themselves by using a heat gun to soften the corners.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place one 4-by-6 unit plate on a flat service with the longer sides vertical.

    • 2

Line up two 4-by-1 unit plates on the right and left side of the 4-by-6 plate leaving a one unit overhang at the top and bottom so that the resulting surface resembles a 6-by-6 square with the corners removed.

    • 3

Place a 4-by-6 unit plate on top of the corner-less square with the longer sides horizontal. This piece will join the three plates below.

    • 4

Lay a 4-by-1 unit plate parallel to the 4-by-6 unit plate on the top and bottom. This will complete the supportive base plate.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to complete three additional base plates. Set aside two plates.

    • 6

Fill every available space on the plate with 1-by-1 bricks. Stack bricks 10 units high.

    • 7

Fit one of the pre-constructed base plates on top of the cylindrical structure.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to build a second story and complete the 20-unit high cylinder.
